About Astronaut José Hernández

José Hernández is a former NASA astronaut whose incredible journey took him from working in the fields as a farm worker to soaring into space. Inspired by early spacewalks and astronaut Franklin Chang-Diaz, he pursued his passion for math and science, earning engineering degrees from the University of the Pacific and UC Santa Barbara. He helped develop the first full-field digital mammography system before finally being selected by NASA after 12 years of applying. In 2009, he flew on mission STS-128. His story is a powerful reminder that perseverance and determination can turn even the most humble beginnings into something extraordinary.
