Home School Day event details

September

Liftoff Into Learning with Space Center Houston- Blast off this fall with an out of this world experience! Students will investigate Newton’s Laws of Motion and concepts of rocketry by completing their mission of a safe and successful launch. Teams will design, build, and launch foam rockets while collecting data on the rocket’s flight trajectory and distance. The young engineers will then modify their designs to see if they can make their rockets fly further.

October

Lunar Home School Day- Building a Habitat on the Moon- Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live on the moon? Here’s your chance to investigate! Corresponding with the NASA Artemis missions, young engineers in training will be challenged to design, model, and present a habit for use on the lunar surface. Students will be challenged to design a lunar habitat that addresses key concerns of life support, water, waste, communication, and transportation!

November

Fueling Space Missions: What do Astronauts Eat? Just in time for Thanksgiving, students will explore how astronauts “feast” onboard the International Space Station! The microgravity environment of the ISS presents unique challenges to simple everyday life, and in this investigative lab students will explore the impact of microgravity on food and discover the importance of a balanced and nutrient-rich diet for maintaining good health in space.

December

Capture your Imagination with the Carbon Capture Lab- This lab activity will model how C02 generation affects temperature in a closed environment, similar to Earth’s atmosphere! As human beings, any environment we occupy will eventually show an increase in Carbon Dioxide, and this poses a serious problem for long distance space travel. If left unchecked for too long, C02 levels on a spacecraft can lead to carbon dioxide poisoning. The Carbon Capture lab will help students understand how increasing Carbon Dioxide levels affect temperature in a closed system, and how we can capture that carbon to refilter it into breathable air!
