How to participate in the challenge

Choose your pillar

Every entry starts by selecting one Eco Innovation Challenge Pillar—then narrowing to a sub-pillar (area of concentration). Use the examples below as inspiration or propose your own idea within the pillar.

How to proceed

  1. Pick a pillar that excites your team.
  2. Choose a suggested sub-pillar (or define a similar focus).
  3. Brainstorm and scope a project idea—prototype, test, and iterate.
  4. Explain who benefits (People), the environmental impact (Planet), and how it scales (Progress).

Environmental Engineering

Designing innovative systems and structures that safeguard our environment and communities.

Sub-pillars and project examples:

  • Climate Resilient Structures
    • Flood-resistant home scale model
    • Hurricane-resistant school shelter concept
    • Cool-roof solutions for desert schools
  • Green Building Materials
    • Bioplastic insulation from agricultural waste
    • Recycled asphalt or concrete bricks
    • 3D-printed walls using sustainable feedstock
  • Urban Heat Reduction
    • Cool-pavement coating tests
    • Vertical garden “cooling wall” prototype
    • Solar-powered shade smart bench
  • Transportation
    • Battery thermal management concept for EVs
    • Algae-based biofuel prototype
    • Smart truck/fleet routing to reduce miles and emissions

Sustainability

Creating resource-smart solutions that preserve our planet for generations to come.

Sub-pillars and project examples:

  • Water Conservation
    • AI-assisted irrigation controller prototype
    • Greywater recycling system for high-occupancy buildings
    • Household water-use tracking app
  • Sustainable Agriculture
    • Biochar soil enhancer trials
    • Classroom aquaponics food-production system
    • Drone-based crop health monitoring workflow
  • Carbon Capture
    • Classroom-scale Direct Air Capture (DAC) model
    • Algae bioreactor for CO₂ absorption
    • Enhanced rock weathering (crushed basalt) demonstration model
  • Waste Reduction
    • Plastic-to-fuel (pyrolysis) concept demo
    • Smart sorting bin with sensors & feedback
    • Zero-waste restaurant or cafeteria program

Why participate? In this challenge, students will:

Build new skills or grow existing ones!

  • Human-centered problem solving: Identify users, define a clear problem within a chosen pillar, and apply design thinking to guide the solution.

  • Evidence-based innovation: Design a prototype or concept, gathering data or feedback to demonstrate feasibility and impact.

  • Clear communication: Craft a compelling innovation. Teams will explain the solution, its benefits, and next steps.

  • Collaboration & leadership: Practice teamwork, project planning, and ethical decision-making while reflecting on sustainability impact.

Receive stellar prizes to fuel their inspiration.

Top Innovations in each division tier will receive a scholarship to the program of their choosing:

  • Space Center U | This immersive, challenging multi-day program promotes teamwork, problem solving, communication and engineering solutions to space-related situations.

OR

  • The Conrad Challenge | The Conrad Challenge is a purpose-driven innovation competition creating the next generation of entrepreneurs who will change the world!

Honorable Mentions will receive:

All participants of the Winter Innovation Workshop and Innovation Showcase will receive a free ticket to Space Center Houston to attend the event.
