Can you imagine gazing down upon Earth as you float weightless in space, seeing the world in a way so few will ever see it? Do you think the experience might change your perspective?
Apparently, it can, and does. This phenomenon has come to be known as the overview effect, which describes the psychological effects astronauts experience when viewing the Earth from space and how that experience can influence a change in perspective.
While we may not be able to tap into the exact feeling astronauts experience with the overview effect, the next best thing is a gallery that will leave you with an overview effect of your own. Scroll through to see some incredible images of our one-of-a-kind “blue marble” that are sure to leave you with some new perspectives!
If you are interested in learning more about this phenomenon, tune in to our virtual August Thought Leader Series presentation, “Earth from Above: Explaining the Overview Effect,” which will feature astronaut Don Pettit, author Frank White and NASA psychologist Tom Williams.
