Camp Strake Participant Information

General Information

Space U Odyssey is a space-themed camping experience at Camp Strake where campers participate in hands-on activities, outdoor adventure, teamwork challenges, and themed programs inspired by space exploration.

Space U Odyssey is held at Camp Strake, located at 2020 Camp Strake Rd., Coldspring, TX 77331. Camp Strake includes campsites, pavilions, an air-conditioned dining hall, STEM center, lake, aquatics center, trails, sports fields, climbing tower, shooting sports complex, chapel, and other program areas.

The Space U Odyssey pilot session is July 12–17, 2026.

Registration & Required Paperwork

Registration is completed through the Space U Odyssey event registration system. https://scoutingevent.com/576-Space

The following items should be completed two weeks before camp when applicable:

  • Annual Health and Medical Record Parts A, B, and C, signed by a physician within one year of camp (Uploaded into io)
  • Emergency Action Plan acknowledgement (Uploaded into io)
  • Special dietary form, if the camper has dietary restrictions (campstrake.org)
  • Required uploads through HealthForms.io using the emailed participant link.

Yes. Campers and adult chaperones need the required Annual Health and Medical Record. The Space U Odyssey lists Parts A, B, and C as required for camp, signed by a physician within one year of camp. This document will be uploaded into Healthforms.io.

Health forms are submitted online through HealthForms.io using the link emailed to the participant. Participants will receive an email from [email protected] with information on how to accept the invitation to submit paperwork. Reminder emails will be sent as event comes closer.

Yes. Adult chaperones attending camp must complete the Adult in Camp Compliance Form, have current Safeguarding Youth training, and upload an Annual Health and Medical Record into Healthforms.io.

Check-In & Arrival

Parents and adult chaperones should be prepared with:

  • Required health forms or confirmation of online submission.
  • Emergency Action Plan acknowledgement
  • Medication forms, if applicable
  • Adult compliance documentation, if applicable
  • Registration confirmation
  • Emergency contact information

Campers should begin hydrating the week before arriving at camp. Participants should be a well-hydrated camper and have campers carry a marked water bottle throughout camp.

Packing List

Campers should bring:

  • Activity shirts or T-shirts
  • Shorts or pants
  • Socks and underwear
  • Closed-toe shoes or hiking boots.
  • Hat or cap
  • Rain gear, poncho, or rain jacket
  • Swimsuit and extra towel
  • Sleeping bag or bedding
  • Pillow
  • Sleeping pad, or air mattress
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Refillable water bottle, marked with name.
  • Day pack (Essentials to get through the day. Examples: water bottle, small first aid kit, sunscreen, emergency medication(s), extra snacks, etc.)
  • Sunscreen
  • Non-Aerosol Insect Repellent
  • Towels and toiletries
  • Personal medications in original containers, if applicable
  • Notebook and writing utensils.
  • Camp chair or stool, optional.
  • Cooling towel, highly recommended
  • Spending money on camp store, recommended.

Yes. Tents are provided for participants, with two campers per tent, following tenting guidelines. Campers may also bring their own tent.

Electricity is limited. Campers should plan to be self-sufficient and should not depend on campsite power. Power will be prioritized for campers that need it for medical accommodations.

Campers should not bring valuables, unnecessary electronics, fireworks, sheath or hunting knives, pets, hammocks, personal firearms or ammunition, jewelry, personal bows and arrows, or generators.

Food, Dining & Dietary Needs

Yes. Meals are included as part of the camp fee for Space U Odyssey programming and miscellaneous program supplies.

Campers with dietary restrictions should complete the online dietary form before camp found at diets.campstrake.org. Event staff will work to meet dietary needs, but Camp Strake cannot guarantee an absolute allergen-free environment for those with severe allergies.

Families of campers with severe allergies or dietary restrictions should complete the dietary restrictions form (diets.campstrake.org) before camp to discuss whether event staff can appropriately manage the camper’s needs. Campers may need to bring supplemental food items depending on their dietary needs.

Yes, but snacks should be stored properly and should not be left loose in tents or campsites.

Medication & Health

All prescription and over-the-counter medications must be listed on the camper’s Annual Health and Medical Record. Medications must be in the original container with the prescription label, and daily pill containers are not acceptable.

Yes. A Routine Drug Administration Record is required for each camper taking prescription or over-the-counter medications. All medication will need to be logged as per State Health Department regulations.

Emergency medications, such as inhalers or epinephrine auto-injectors, must be carried by the youth participant, as needed. The camper should know how to use the medication and must notify an event staff immediately after self-administering emergency medication.

Camp App & Communication

Yes. Camp Strake uses the Sam Houston Area Council camp app, available on Apple and Android platforms. The app provides access to resources such as the camp map, schedule, program updates, and emergency announcements. A quick way to download the app is going to app.campstrake.org

Event updates are typically sent to the registration contact or participant email listed in the registration system. Registration contacts should share updates with campers, parents, and adult chaperones.

Bikes, Vehicles & Camp Movement

Non-motorized bikes are allowed on paved roads to access campsites and program areas and on the marked mountain bike trail by the bike barn. Helmets and proper safety procedures are required. Bikes are not allowed on sidewalks, grassy areas, or other trails.

Vehicle procedures will follow Camp Strake event instructions. Expect limited vehicle access and follow all check-in, unloading, parking, and traffic directions from event staff.

Leaving Camp Early

A camper under age 18 may only leave camp early with an adult authorized on Part B of the camper’s medical form. Anyone leaving early must check out through the camp office and receive an exit ticket before leaving camp.

Emergency Preparedness & Safety Procedures

Camp Strake maintains a detailed Emergency Action Plan (EAP) in accordance with Texas youth camp safety requirements and Scouting America safety standards. The EAP outlines procedures for severe weather, medical emergencies, lost campers, fire response, evacuations, and other emergency situations.

Camp Strake utilizes emergency sirens, staff communication systems, radios, camp app notifications, and in-person instructions to communicate during emergencies. Campers and adult chaperones should immediately follow all instructions from camp staff.

East Texas weather can change quickly, especially during summer months. In the event of severe thunderstorms, lightning, high winds, or tornado warnings, campers and staff will move into designated shelter locations until the “all clear” is given.

Yes. Emergency drills may occur during camp in accordance with Scouting America and Texas youth camp safety standards. Campers are expected to participate seriously and follow all staff instructions.

Space U Odyssey staff and adult chaperones maintain participant rosters and accountability procedures throughout camp. During emergencies, campers will assemble by campsite or assigned group while attendance is verified.

If camp evacuation becomes necessary, Camp Strake staff will direct all participants to designated evacuation or assembly locations. Families will receive communication updates through camp communication systems and registration contact information.

All permanent structures at Camp Strake are designated emergency shelter locations during severe weather events. Camp staff will direct campers to the nearest appropriate shelter area if needed.

Camp Strake maintains on-site health and medical support for minor injuries and illnesses. Serious medical emergencies may require transport to a local medical facility. Parents/guardians and emergency contacts will be notified as quickly as possible.
