Sensory Room Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting at Space Center Houston

Space Center Houston opened its new Sensory Room on April 17. The space was made possible by a donation from MegaStar Financial and its CEO, Anita Padilla-Fitzgerald.

The addition marks a milestone in the organization’s commitment to its Access and Inspiration brand pillars. As a Certified Autism Center designated by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, the sensory room will provide a supportive environment for neurodivergent guests and their families.

“Space Center Houston is striving to ensure our exhibits and experiences are accessible and inclusive for all guests,” said William Harris, president and CEO, Space Center Houston. “We are dedicated to being a destination that allows everyone to experience the wonders of space exploration comfortably and at their own pace.”

The Sensory Room features sensory-friendly lighting, interactive elements, diverse seating options, noise-reduction headphones, an adult-sized changing table, calming imagery, and more.

“As a neurodivergent woman, I know what it means to finally feel a sense of belonging,” said Rachel Schwartzman, Accessibility and Inclusion specialist, Space Center Houston. “The Sensory Room is where true inclusion happens. It tells people of all ages that they are welcome, and space education is for all.”
