International Deaf Week 2020

Did you know that International Deaf Week 2020 is Sept. 21-27 and Sept. 23 is International Day of Sign Languages?

The International Week of the Deaf (IWD) is an initiative of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and was first launched in 1958 in Rome, Italy. It is celebrated annually by the global Deaf Community during the last full week of September to commemorate the same month the first World Congress of the WFD was held.

Accessibility and inclusivity are top priorities at Space Center Houston. We want everyone to be able to visit and enjoy our center.

We are excited to announce that we will be hosting the first Virtual Campout for Deaf and hard of hearing guests on Nov. 14. Click here to learn more about our Virtual Campouts. Captions and American Sign Language (ASL) will be provided.

We also make ASL interpreters available for our guests with notice. ASL interpreters and Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) services are also provided at many Space Center Houston events.

Our Mission Briefing Center utilizes induction loop technology. Guests may switch their hearing aid to the T-position in this theater to take advantage of this technology. Additionally all our permanent visual displays at Space Center Houston are closed captioned.

Earlier this year we had the pleasure of hosting a fantastic presentation abut the “Gallaudet Eleven,” which refers to 11 Deaf men from Gallaudet College, now Gallaudet University, who participated in a joint research program to study the effects of prolonged weightlessness on the human body.
