The Girls STEM Pathway initiative is dedicated to engaging girls with 21st century skills to fuel their imaginations and provide authentic learning experiences in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers.
Presented by longtime supporter Boeing, Space Center Houston’s Girls STEM Pathway is a comprehensive six phase initiative. The Girls STEM Pathway series takes place throughout the year at Space Center Houston and via online platforms. Each phase of the pathway builds on the prior phase in hands-on STEM experiential learning opportunities that promote the development of skills, with earned successes and confidence underpinning continued interest and motivation.
Women of STEM Wednesday, is a one-day event for 3rd-6th graders featuring a female STEM professional that exposes girls to the wonders of space exploration and STEM careers. During this phase of the Girls STEM Pathway, scholars will participate in interactive STEM presentations with female scientist and engineers. We offer both virtual and onsite sessions! Available for school groups.
Girls STEM Academy, is a 5-session program that introduces 7th and 8th grade girls to the importance of teamwork, and the science of space flight through authentic cross-curricular activities. The program is designed to encourage middle-school girls to apply STEM concepts and skills through hands-on, inquiry-based learning. Scholars will also engage in innovative and creative applications of science content that is aligned with the TEKS. The final session includes a graduation. Available for school groups.
Mentor Café is a program that takes place in an informal “café” style setting. through 10 one-hour mentorship sessions held on Tuesdays from 5–6 PM, virtually or onsite at Space Center Houston. Through hands-on activities, interactive challenges, and meaningful conversations, participants connect with leading women in STEM and gain insight into educational and career pathways while strengthening their STEM identity.
Grade Level: 6th-12th (Ages 11-18)
A five-day immersive summer experience for rising ninth graders focused on space exploration, teamwork, and preparation for rigorous STEM learning in high school.
On Station: Scientific Research guides students through conducting their own high-level scientific research investigations in STEM, subsequently developing their own research projects. Our students may also use these projects to participate in Science Fair and other quality academic events. Sessions run concurrently with the school year. Grade Level: 6th-12th (Ages 11-18)
Participants who complete multiple phases return as mentors for younger students, strengthening the program’s supportive STEM community.
Space Center Houston gathers extensive data throughout the program’s six phases to measure its impact on participants and ascertain the effectiveness of strategies to change attitudes while driving motivation and confidence in STEM.
Boeing’s support for the development of this initiative includes three consecutive years of grant support to launch the program in 2016 along with a growing cadre of Boeing employees who provide a volunteer network of female STEM professionals who serve as role models offering mentorship support to motivate and help young girls be successful in the workforce.
