Exhibits Director Paul Spana (center) tells members about our lunar rocks collection.

The series debuted December 2017 when an intimate gathering of members enjoyed insights from Exhibits Director Paul Spana. The evening featured an in-depth exploration of Space Center Houston’s lunar rocks collection – the largest collection of lunar samples on public display in the world and one of only eight places in the world where one can touch a moon rock.

Spana detailed specific lunar sites that were selected for sample collection during the Apollo lunar landings and what those samples revealed about the moon’s composition. Since our moon does not experience erosion and is not influenced by atmospheric dynamics, moon rocks are essentially a look back in time to when the moon’s crust was formed some 4.4 billion years ago, he explained.

A family admires astronaut Deke Slayton’s Apollo-Soyuz Test Project pressure suit in Astronaut Gallery.

To close the event, Spana took guests into Space Center Houston’s Lunar Samples Vault to show our remarkable collection of moon rocks.
