On May 9, Space Center Houston hosted its third biennial Galaxy Gala at Ballroom at Bayou Place in downtown Houston, raising nearly $700,000 to support the center’s Innovation Gateway and other STEM education programs.

Close to 400 guests mixed-and-mingled, enjoyed a chance to see and interact with cutting-edge innovations close-up and experienced electrifying live entertainment performances throughout the evening. Co-chaired by Peggy Kostial with Shanell and Walker Moody, the event shed light on the center's innovation and science learning opportunities and its efforts to further the next generation of explorers, engineers and scientists.

Highlights of the evening included celebrating and honoring longtime Space Center Houston board member and supporter Fred Griffin and the announcement of an exciting new exhibit coming to Space Center Houston -- Space X’s twice flown Falcon 9 first stage booster. Coming to Space Center Houston in summer 2019, the Falcon 9 is the first and only refurbished booster used for a NASA mission.

“We’re excited to welcome Falcon 9 to our growing center,” said William T. Harris, president and CEO of the science and space exploration learning center. “It’s part of an historic achievement designing a reusable rocket to further space exploration and America’s commercial space industry. The new exhibit is one way we’re interpreting the future of human spaceflight. We are deeply grateful to SpaceX for their contribution.”

“We strive to inspire youth to be part of the NASA mission,” said Harris. “From launching a rocket to designing a future spacecraft, we want everyone to have exceptional learning opportunities and to think outside the box like a scientist, engineer or astronaut. Thank you to our generous sponsors and donors whose contributions help us provide authentic learning experiences to people of all ages.”

Galaxy Gala returns to Houston in 2021! We hope you’ll join us for the next mission.

Honoring Fred Griffin

Fred Griffin’s personal strategy for success is “Create your vision. Build a dream."

Work hard and never, ever give up.” This credo has driven his successful career in the purchase, planning, and development of major projects throughout the greater Houston region. Since 1980, Fred and his partners (the Griffin/Juban Companies and Griffin Partners) have built or acquired projects encompassing approximately 11.2 million square feet with an aggregate value of $1.5 billion. His deep love for community and family are renown. Married for more than 50 years to the love of his life, Betsy, he is the proud father of Anne and Edward and doting grandfather of grandsons Jack and Ben.

He has been the quiet force behind successful philanthropic endeavors benefitting Armand Bayou Nature Preserve to Space Center Houston among many others. A longtime member of the Board of Directors for The Manned Space Flight Education Foundation/Space Center Houston, as chairman from 2014 to 2018 he led the campaign to build Independence Plaza. Showcasing Space Shuttle Independence on top of the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft 905, this unique exhibit started the metamorphosis of the Space Center into a worldwide destination.
